Mehrabian's Rule is NOT an all-purpose "appearance is 90%" law. His experiment found that when your words say one thing but your voice and face say another — so the real feeling is hard to read — people trust the voice and face over the words. That's it. Mehrabian himself warned against applying the numbers to ordinary, consistent messages. If you take it as "words are only 7%, so skip them," you'll create disasters (imagine skipping the dose or the meeting time!).

The three signals get sisterly nicknames: Words (what you say), Voice (pitch, brightness, speed) and Body (expression, gaze, posture). Say "I'm listening" while staring at your paperwork and the feeling never lands. Three ways to line them up: (1) match words and voice ("take your time" said slowly), (2) turn your whole body toward the person, (3) practice noticing your own mismatch. You don't have to be perfect — when the candle flickers, just cup it gently with your hand.
